"But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander." ~ 1 Peter 3:15-16
Book Review - The Da Vinci Code

I think one of the craziest things I ever did during this period of examination is to finish reading the book, "The Da Vinci Code" under eight hours. Well, since this is a controversial book that brought up a lot of arguments to life, I thought I might as well give it a review down here.

First of all, I like to give it a fiver stars thumb up for its thriller and fiction element. It is indeed one of the best fiction books I ever came before. As a matter of fact, the twist in the story line as the plot unfolds is quite unexpected for me, though I must also say that twists are rare in this book. In general reading, readers can much anticipate what will happen afterward. But what makes this book a success, in my opinion, is its incorporation of religious element into the very book. I think this is the heartbeat of the book with all its iconography, religious symbolism, and secret rituals. I, myself am a fan of these things, thus finding this fiction book a good read.

But, I will also recommend readers who hold the book in their hands to read it with a cautious mind, for the book will create an aura that promote its content to be the truth. Unaware readers will definitely fall into the trap to believing every words in the book to be a fact, forgetting that it is only a fiction book. Even in the very first few pages of the book, where the author declared that the secret organization mentioned in the book to be a true entity, demands more criticism as the alleged secret organization seems to be a modern day hoax.

Nevertheless, the whole big issue about this book, especially from the christian circles is the fact that the book has its cannon targeted at christianity, at least on the surface. With much of its anti-christian statements made by the fictional characters, it is easily for an already antagonistic reader towards christianity, to deepen his "hatred" for the faith. In fact, I am overwhelmed by the numerous "outrageous" statements written in the book, when the author himself claims to be a "christian". Not to mention many of the conspiracy theories embedded in the book. An antagonistic reader will surely be well served by this book in his own biases without giving it some thoughts. Some of the statements which depicted badly on christianity regards to the crusades, blind faith, brainwashing of the mass, an outdated and unreliable ancient book and the like.

A general point to clarify is that Catholicism, as mentioned in the book, has nothing to do with christianity. The office of the Pope and its hierarchical system has no justicifications in the light of the Scripture. Another point worth making is the fact that Jesus is truly not married as revealed by the four gospels. What the author may have made used of to support the conspiracy theories stemmed largely from the unrecognized gospel writings which has no spiritual authority. And even with that, some of the things are mis-represented from those books.

Conclusion: Indeed, this book is a must read for christian especially. If any christian find his or her faith shaking after reading this fiction book, it may be time to do some seriously studies into church history. We need not evade this book like the ten plagues in Pharaoh's court, but read it with an informed mind. Personally, I encountered at least one person who used the same reasons as given in the book to debunk christianity. Thus it will be good to read it and understand where these people are coming from and be prepared to give an answer for our living faith.
